Soccer: Pace's Hat Trick Leads to Victory Over Enloe

John Pace scores 3 goals versus Enloe.
For the second time this week, the men's soccer team from Broughton looked like they wanted to play.  The energy level on the field started low, but built as the first half progressed.  The first half included John Pace's first hat trick of the season and led to a 5-1 conference victory for the Caps.

The scoring began in the 2nd minute when Pace took a pass from Lassiter Tollison and gently rolled it into the goal.  The shot looked like a change-up in baseball and proved to be effective.  Enloe did not get down.  Six minutes later, Enloe was able to find an opening in the Broughton defense and cross a ball into the box, where it seemed to remain for 10 seconds before Ian Hoffman put it into the net.  The Caps recaptured the lead for good in 12th minute when keeper Matt Franciosi hit Tollison on a deep run behind the Enloe defense.  Six minutes later a PK was awarded to Pace after he was taken out in the box while waiting on a cross from the right wing.  Pace placed the kick nicely in the left corner to extend the Caps lead to 3-1.  Pace finished the half with a nice shot in the 39th minute of the game, wrapping up his hat trick.  As usual, Franciosi performed well throughout the first half keeping several nice shots out of goal.

The second half the Caps did a good job maintaining their focus and energy.  Coach Hernandez was able to go deep into his bench in the second half promoting enthusiastic play throughout the half.  Everett McCord started the second half in goal and Grant Bishop relieved him late in the half.  Both performed well.  The last goal of the night was scored with 8 minutes remaining in the contest.  Pace was moving quickly through the midfield with the ball when an Enloe midfielder collided with him.  The Enloe player went down, Pace did not.  The referee did not blow his whistle nor signal play on, but most of the Enloe players stopped.  Pace proceded to retrieve the ball from the deep right corner of the attacking third.  Tollison and CJ Tikvart moved down the middle to support Pace, who crossed the ball perfectly.  The defense converged on Tollison, who dummied the ball leaving Tickvart with a nice look at goal, which he nailed.

Despite two starters nursing injuries on the sidelines, the Caps played well.  This result leaves both Broughton and Enloe tied with Sanderson for third in the Cap8 with a 2-2 conference record.  Next week, Broughton plays twice in Wake Forest.  The Caps are at Heritage High Monday night and at Wakefield High Wednesday.  Both matches begin at 6:30pm.
