Basketball: Great Year for Both Boys' Teams

Both of Broughton's men's basketball teams had fantastic seasons.

The Broughton Men’s Varsity Basketball Team finished the season 22-8 with its first 20 win season in recent memory. They finished 2nd in the CAP-8 Conference regular season with a conference record of 11-3.They also finished in 2nd place in the CAP-8 Conference Tournament. They won two games in this year’s Glaxo Holiday Invitational Tournament and lost a third game in Overtime. They also advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA 4-A State Playoffs. The most memorable game of the season was a 16 point rally to beat #1 Wakefield in Overtime on Senior Night.

Staats Battle was named to the Glaxo Holiday Invitational All-Tournament Team. Battle hit 7 of 8 3-pointers which was one short of the Glaxo game record but it was a new Broughton High School record. The Broughton Team tied the tournament record for 3-pointers in a game (11) which is held by Kinston (1994). The Capitals also broke the record for 3-pointers in a tournament with 24; the previous record was 23 by Santa Ana Valley, California (1994)

Conor Strickland, Staats Battle and Devante Graham were named to the Cap-8 All-Conference team, the first time that Broughton had three players in recent memory. Cyrus Stewart was Honorable Mention.

Coach Bill White summarized the JV men's team as "Great season in many respects."  The teams' season record was 21-1.  They are conference champions for the third consecutive year.  In tournament play, the JV Caps won the Athens Drive Holiday Invitation for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations to both teams for a fantastic season!
