Soccer: Broughton Loses Battle of PKs

Two quick goals by Heritage to start the game proved to be the edge in what turned out to be a tense back-and-forth road game that Broughton ultimately lost 2-4.

Broughton was in the hole almost from the beginning of the game, as Heritage scored twice in the first three minutes.

But the Caps regrouped, and got on the scoreboard when Ike Drooz converted a penalty kick after a Broughton player was fouled in the box. Keeper Frankie Stallings made a nice save as Heritage went on the attack following the penalty kick, and defender Jack Krueger made a save off of a Heritage corner kick.

Both teams had multiple scoring chances in the second half, with Broughton keeper Trey Morton making three saves during a four-minute stretch more than midway through the half.

Then, with just over eight minutes left in the game, Broughton's Chris Vlahoplus converted another penalty kick to tie the score at 2-2.

But about four minutes later, the referee called a penalty on Broughton inside the box, and Heritage converted to take a 2-3 lead.

Broughton mounted a furious attempt to tie the game, with Wilbur Gazga and Rosendo Sierra-Flores just missing on shots. Morton made another good save with less than two minutes to go in the game. But then, with Broughton pushing up for one last chance, Heritage's forwards broke free in the last 30 seconds to score the game's final goal.

Earlier, the junior varsity defeated Heritage, 3-0. Keeper Edgar Romero made three saves to preserve the shutout.
