Soccer: Caps open with win over SE Raleigh

The Broughton Caps kicked off the 2014 varsity soccer season Tuesday night with a 4-1 non-conference win over Southeast Raleigh.

The game started slowly, with both teams struggling to find a rhythm. But the Caps struck first, nearly midway through the first half, when junior Ibrahim Mohamud headed in a corner kick by junior Ike Drooz.

It didn't take long, though, for Southeast Raleigh to tie the score, converting a penalty kick as the result of a Broughton foul inside the box.

The Caps took control of the game at that point, connecting passes and just missing on several scoring opportunities. A header by sophomore Abdulle Ibrahim hit the post, and a long strike by senior Jack Krueger hit the crossbar.

With about two minutes remaining in the first half, the Caps caught the Southeast Raleigh keeper out of position and connected several short passes before Abdulle Ibrahim scored at close range off of an assist by junior Elvis Wiredu.

Broughton continued to apply pressure as the second half began, with senior Brandon Gettinger hitting the crossbar on a header. Following a  handball in the box by a Southeast Raleigh defender, Krueger converted a penalty kick to make the score 3-1.

Southeast Raleigh quickly threatened to get back in the game, forcing senior keeper Frankie Stallings to make a diving save to knock a shot wide of the goal. The Caps then failed to convert a penalty kick, but senior Eli White finished the game's scoring by burying a volley off of a beautiful cross by senior Peter Winter.

Every non-injured player on the Broughton team saw action in the 4-1 win. The Caps will return to Athens Drive on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. match against to finish the game that was stopped by stormy weather on Monday.
