Soccer: Caps begin conference play with win

Broughton kicked off its Cap 8 conference season Wednesday night with a hard-fought 4-1 win over a scrappy Leesville team.

Ibrahim Mohamud
The Caps were led by junior Ibrahim Mohamud, who scored two goals to go along with penalty kicks converted by junior Ike Drooz and senior Brandon Gettinger.

Both teams had chances in the first 20 minutes of the game, but Broughton struck first when junior Elvis Wiredu drew a foul inside the Leesville box as he was attacking the goal slightly more than midway through the half. Drooz converted the penalty kick to give Broughton a 1-0 lead.

Broughton scored again about 12 minutes later when the Leesville keeper couldn't hold on to a shot from outside by Gettinger. A hustling Mohamud was there to convert the rebound from close range to make the score 2-0 going into halftime.

Brandon Gettinger
Leesville was the aggressor as the second half began, scoring just three minutes into the game. The visitors continued to apply pressure, forcing senior keeper Trey Morton to make a save less than a minute after Leesville scored.

Broughton got some breathing room about midway through the half, though, when Mohamud took a pass from Wiredu down the right side and curled a beautiful shot inside the far post.

With a few of its players battling cramps, Broughton fought off several attacks by Leesville thanks to strong defense from juniors Hyu A and Grant Tyler and senior David Ridgeway. The final goal came with just under a minute remaining in the game, when senior Eli White drew a foul in the Leesville box. Gettinger converted the penalty kick to make the final score 4-1.

Ike Drooz
Earlier, the junior varsity team played Leesville to a 1-1 tie after the Caps' Donovan Nicholson converted a free kick late in the game.

Broughton's next game is Monday night at Millbrook.

Finally, a shout out to Broughton seniors Sean Betts and Sam Holden, for ably handling the announcing and time-keeping responsibilities for home games.
