Soccer: Caps come from behind for victory

Broughton relied on two quick goals in the second half to pull out a come-from-behind win Thursday night against visiting Wakefield.

The two teams played a back-and-forth affair for much of the first half, with junior Hyu A making a couple of defensive stops, before the Caps struck more than 25 minutes into the game. Junior Abdulle Ibrahim finished off a crossing pass by junior Bryant O'Neal to give Broughton an initial 1-0 lead.

But Wakefield scored a few minutes later on a defensive miscue by Broughton, leading to a 1-1 halftime score.

Wakefield scored again about five minutes into the second half to take a 1-2 lead on the Caps that stood for nearly 15 minutes.

But Broughton evened the score with about 18 minutes remaining in the game when senior Brandon Gettinger was fouled inside the box and then converted the subsequent penalty kick. Less than a minute later, Gettinger assisted when senior Matt Brickhouse scored to give Broughton the go-ahead goal.

The Caps fought off repeated attacks by Wakefield over the next 15 minutes, with senior keeper Trey Morton making a brilliant save on a Wakefield scoring chance with about 30 seconds remaining in the game.

The score at the buzzer was 3-2 in favor of the Caps to keep them atop the Cap 8 Conference standings with just two games left in the regular season. Broughton next plays Monday night, when the team's seniors will be recognized during a home game against Enloe.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity team continued its winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Wakefield.

The goals were scored by Eric Johnsen, Luis Hernandez and Jacob Hill, with assists by Graham Gunter and Kebe Martinez. Hill's goal, on a free kick from outside the box, was unassisted.

A big shout-out to senior Sam Holden for filling in as the game announcer in senior Sean Betts' absence.
