CAPS ESCAPE TRENTINI STADIUM WITH WIN!

On a raining evening in Wake Forest, the Broughton Caps women's soccer team's mettle was tested for the full 80 minutes by the Wake Forest Cougars.  With rain falling and a pitch that showed the wear and tear of the Fall's football season, Caps junior Julia Stevens tried to get the scoring started sending a cross through the 18 yard box in the 3rd minute that fellow junior Lily Schneider was able to collect only to have her shot carom off the goal post.  Twenty hard fought minutes later Schneider was taken down by a Cougars defender just inside the right side of the 18 for which she was awarded a shot from the penalty spot.  Schneider converted putting the Caps up 1-0.  The trench warfare continued and in the 38th minute senior goal keeper Allie Cutler stopped a Wake Forest shot by Hannah Dion only to have the ball bounce off Dion and find the goal.  1-1 at the half.  Broughton would come out with renewed energy in the second half.  In the 43rd minute, junior Sarah Grace Lasso collected a pass and dribbled into the 18, her arching shot was touched up and onto the crossbar by the Cougars keeper.  The ball fell onto the on-running sophomore Savannah Jones who punched it in to the back of the net.  2-1 Caps.  The Cougars would not concede and in the 55th minute, Dion, collected a pass and dribbled down the right flank past the Caps defender before slotting a low shot past Cutler.  2-2.  Not wanting to drop a game to Wake Forest, the Caps fought on and in the 67th minute junior Emma Willard does what she does and found the old onion bag to put the Caps up 3-2 and seal the win.  Broughton is now 8-1 and ranked #10 in the 4-A state rankings, 6-1 and atop Cap 8.  The Caps will complete last Thursday's weather delayed game at Enloe this afternoon at 4:30 at Enloe.  The Caps have a 3-0 lead with 15:09 left in the first half.  Monday the Caps travel to ever-dangerous foe Leesville Road High School for a Cap 8 contest.
