Caps Whip Warriors

The Broughton men's soccer team ended its non-conference schedule on a winning note, trouncing the visiting East Wake Warriors, 5-0. The Caps dominated the entire match, as East Wake hardly had a sniff at the goal, with only one decent shot in each half. Coach Nick Wheeler was able to give his reserves plenty of action in the one-sided match.

Elvis Wiredu showed off his goal-scoring form, tallying two goals. He opened the scoring in the 9th minute after shaking off the last defender on a nifty cut back, then calmly forced the keeper to over-commit before gently tucking the ball in the net. In the 30th minute junior Sam Stein scored his third goal in the last 4 matches when he was taken down in the box and comfortably beat the keeper on the ensuing penalty. Senior Benjamin McCord saw his first action in goal for the Caps after being out all season with an illness, and he kept the Warriors off the score sheet.

The Caps opened the scoring in the second half with another penalty kick, after Ibrahim Mohamud was fouled in the box by an East Wake defender. His first attempt was saved by the keeper, but the assistant referee ruled the keeper had left his line prematurely. Mohamud buried his second attempt.

Wiredu scored his second goal of the match in the 56th minute, deftly chipping the keeper after a brilliantly-timed run and perfect pass from Bryant O'Neal.

Senior co-captain Grant Tyler finished the scoring in the 61st minute on an unassisted goal, coming off a blocked shot.

Junior keeper Jack Nickens ensured the clean sheet for Broughton. Another standout in the match was junior fullback Jacob Hill, who has shown improvement in each game of the season.

Broughton outshot East Wake 20 to 8 and improved their record to 4-3 with the win.

The Caps have a bit of a break before their next match, when they open up the Cap 8 season on Monday, September 14th, hosting Wake Forest at 6:30 pm. If you cannot attend, follow the Caps' live Twitter feed at @CapsMensSoccer.
