Volleyball Claims Cap-8 Opener

Broughton (6-0, 1-0) swept Wakefield (5-3, 0-1) 25-21, 25-15, 25-11 on Thursday night in the season's first conference match for both teams.  Tiana Butler led the way with 8 kills (.455), 6 digs and a season-high 7 service aces.  Kalee Vanderhorst tallied 14 kills (.333), 3 aces and 5 digs and Katja Ehlers had 10 kills (.368) and a team-high 14 digs.  Kati Smith posted 34 assists, 5 digs, 3 kills and 2 aces and Rachel Byrd and Grace Youngblood each added 2 kills.  Holli Smith chipped in 5 digs and Amber Russell and Alden Willis each picked up 2 digs.

Tiana Butler's ace out of a Wakefield time-out ended the first set but the visiting Wolverines jumped to an 8-2 lead to open the second frame behind the strong blocking presence of Gabbi Ingram and Ade Owkoniran.  The Caps responded with a 19-4 run that featured 9 straight service points by Butler.  Kati Smith's ace on set point gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage.  Broughton took an 8-1 lead to start the final stanza on their way to their fifth sweep in six matches.  The Capitals collected 12 aces and served at a season-high 91.7 clip.

Broughton is ranked #1 in the MaxPreps NC poll and #53 in their national poll.  Cap-8 play continues as Enloe visits next Tuesday (4:30/5:30).
