Caps Soccer Ties Leesville

Broughton played its second consecutive overtime match, but this time, no last second heroics were in the cards as the Caps tied Leesville Road, 2-2. Broughton was trying to avenge an earlier loss to Leesville, but despite ample opportunities, the Caps couldn't get a game-winning goal.

Leesville scored first in the 20th minute in a goal similar to one from the first game: a low, driving corner kick, with multiple Leesville players running in the box, and one left unmarked to drill it home.

And the Leesville defense was man-marking senior striker Elvis Wiredu, and often had two or three defenders on him. Somehow, however, Wiredu found some space with the ball at his foot, 25 yards from goal, and shot a laser past the keeper to tie the match in the 26th minute.

Broughton controlled the first half, outshooting Leesville 12-5. But once again, the tables turned in the second half. Leesville found its rhythm, maintained shape and possession, and forced Broughton to chase. Offensively, Broughton resorted to balls over the top, with very little working through the midfield. After a flurry, Leesville took the lead in the 54th minute off a beautiful display of teamwork and a solid finish.

The Caps, however, refused to fold, and finally scored off of one of Esteban Salinas Noyola's dangerous long throws. The ball managed to bounce over the Leesville defense, making its way to the far post where Ibrahim Mohamud deftly shot it into the open net in the 64th minute.

Neither team could score in the final 16 minutes, and the match went into overtime. Not much action took place in the first OT, but in the second, both teams were a bit unlucky. Broughton frustratingly hit the crossbar on a long distance shot that fooled the keeper. With just a couple of minutes to go, the Caps fouled a Leesville player in the box. On the ensuing PK, sophomore keeper saved the shot, and the day, when he fully laid out to his right, spectacularly pushing the ball wide of the goal.

It was a great night of soccer, and as disheartening as it might have been for both teams, the final score was just.

Special thanks to the Broughton Dance Team for a lively and entertaining halftime show.

The Caps are now 6-2-1 in the Cap 8 and 10-5-1 overall. Their next match is at 6:30 on Wednesday at Millbrook. If you are unable to attend, follow the Caps' Twitter feed at @CapsMensSoccer.
