Volleyball Pushes Past Apex, Hosts Leesville Road on Thursday

Broughton (21-0) advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-20 victory over Apex (16-7) on Tuesday night.  Kalee Vanderhorst had a match-high 14 kills (.353) and 5 digs and Tiana Butler collected 5 kills (.500), 4 blocks, 2 aces and 5 digs.  Katja Ehlers added 4 kills and a team-high 11 digs and Rachel Byrd chipped in 4 kills (.375).  Kati Smith tallied 25 assists and 8 digs and Grace Youngblood had 4 blocks.  Alden Willis and Holli Smith each scooped up 8 digs.

Senior outside hitter Abbey Veit paced Apex with 13 kills.

The Caps took early leads in each of the first two sets and held off the Cougars in both to claim a 2-0 advantage going into the third frame.  Apex jumped to an 8-4 lead and stretched it to 16-8 before the Capitals ended the evening on a 17-4 run to win the match.  A strong blocking performance by Apex helped force Broughton post a season-low team hitting pct. of .284 (29 kills, 6 errors, 81 attempts) but the Caps missed just one serve on the evening in recording a season-high serve pct of 98.6.  

Broughton hosts Leesville Road (18-2) on Thursday night in a third-round tilt.  The Pride defeated D.H. Conley 25-21, 25-11, 25-23 in their second-round contest on Tuesday.
