Caps Soccer Ousted by Laney

After a season where all expectations were exceeded -- except for the expectations of the team itself -- the Broughton men's soccer team were ousted from the NCHSAA 4A playoffs by Wilmington Laney 2-0. The match was played before a raucous home crowd in Wilmington, and the Buccaneers showed why they beat top-seeded and #4 nationally ranked Apex, as they controlled possession throughout the majority of the game. An athletic, gifted, and savvy team, Laney won most of the 50-50 balls, had more shots, and generally controlled the match. But this Broughton team, who was without its leading scorer, dynamic senior Elvis Wiredu, for the third match in a row, frustrated Laney throughout the first half. Neither team had a great scoring opportunity, leading to a scoreless first half.

Laney came out a bit more aggressively in the second half, but Broughton held its own for the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, the defense made the mistake of giving midfielder David Dailey, easily the most talented player on the pitch, too much space, and he buried a driving 25 yard shot into the far upper netting past Broughton keeper, Clay Oxford. Ten minutes later, 6 foot 3 inch Tristan Nelson soared above the Caps' defenders to head in a corner kick to put the Bucs up 2-0. The Caps gave the home team a bit of a scare when Grant Tyler's shot was barely parried over the cross bar by the Laney keep.

And so ends a fantastic season. The Caps admirably defended their Eastern Region championship, scrappily fighting for every goal and tenaciously defending throughout. The team did what every coach dreams of: getting better each week throughout the season.

A special shout out to the seniors of the team, who have worn the Broughton kit for a final time:
