CAPS SUFFER DEFEAT ON EMOTIONAL NIGHT

Your humble correspondent is honored to "guest blog" for the Caps!  On Wednesday, March 23rd, Broughton traveled to Sanderson High School for its third Cap 8 contest of the season.  It was a beautiful North Carolina Spring evening for a defensive battle on the pitch.

After a back-and-forth struggle the first 40', the score at halftime was nil-nil.  The Caps struggle to get any offensive firepower going and the defensesive back line, as well as the midfield, were called into action.  Sophomores Lucy Krueger and Meredith Brown made several saves and clearances in front of the Broughton goal to hold the Spartans scoreless.

In the 48' however, Sanderson took a shot from distance on the right flank beyond the area and it cleared between senior Eliza Taylors' fingertips and the cross bar.  1-0 Sanderson.

Four minutes later junior Savannah "Savvi" Jones made a beautiful run down the left flank, entered the box and took a shot aiming for far post that deflected off the 'keeper and into, yes, you got it, the ole' onion bag.  1-1.

Unfortunately, the Spartans would take the lead in the 73' off a poke in after a "scrum" at the goal line.

The Caps fall to 1-4-2 and 0-2-1 in Cap 8 play.  Broughton returns to the pitch on April 5th verses Wakefield High School.  After the game, second year varsity coach Kelly Mastin announced her resignation.  Mastin, a spirited, beloved coach, teaches full time, is going to graduate school, and has a toddler - a full plate for sure.  David Powers will take over the helm and former Cap coach and North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame member, Izzy Hernandez will assist with the Caps for the remainder of the season.
