All the senior ladies...

In many ways, it was a glorious night for the Lady Caps soccer team. The sun was shining, 11 seniors were recognized for their contributions to the Broughton soccer program, and the shots kept flying toward the Heritage goal.

But in a scenario that has become all too familiar this season, none of Broughton's shots managed to find their way into the goal. And as a result, a Heritage goal midway through the first overtime period was enough to give the Huskies a 0-1 win Wednesday over the Lady Caps on Senior Night.

With 10 of the seniors starting (and injured senior Carly Black working as the public address announcer), the Lady Caps dominated play in the first half. Broughton got off multiple shots in the half, hitting the crossbar twice, sending a handful of shots just wide and forcing the Heritage keeper to scramble to keep a couple of shots out of the net.

Meanwhile, Broughton's defense continued the strong play it has demonstrated for most of the season. Heritage had only a handful of scoring opportunities, with some of their better chances snuffed out by good plays by seniors Sarah Grace Lasso, Julia Stevens, Kelly Ann Evans, Lily Highsmith and Eliza Taylor.

The second half was more of a back-and-forth affair, with Broughton controlling the play early in the period before finding themselves on their heels later in the half. The Lady Caps still had more scoring opportunities than the Huskies, but continued to struggle to finish their chances.

After Heritage scored in the first overtime period, Broughton continued to feverishly attack the Huskies' goal. But the final score was 0-1, likely ending any long-shot hopes for a spot in the state playoffs.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity lost 1-3 to Heritage. It was the final game in a strong season for the JV, which finished with 11 wins against two ties and three losses. Go Caps!

The varsity team has two games left on its schedule - road trips to Wakefield on Thursday and Enloe on Friday.
