Caps Football Posts Win Against Cary Imps

Broughton's varsity football team toppled the Cary Imps 26-16 on Friday night at home. The victory enabled the team to surpass its win totals from each of the past three seasons as it jumped out to a 2-0 start under new head coach Chris Dawson.

The game was largely a defensive slugfest as the Caps forced seven turnovers en route to a victory that avenged a 7-10 late game loss to the Imps in 2015. Once again the Caps started the game quickly as they forced and recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, followed by a 29-yard touchdown pass from Clifton Chavis to Tyair Smith on the Caps' first offensive play. Broughton then battled to maintain control of the game as high temperatures tested the toughness and endurance of both teams.

The Caps received a huge boost from its secondary with five different players recording a Cary interception -- sophomores Brandon Codrington and Tynias Peace, juniors Tyair Smith and Terell Johnson, and senior Metak Wiggins. This capped off significant improvement for the squad as the defense had allowed over 400 passing yards to Apex in its previous win. The game ball was presented to the defensive backs by the coaches.

Clifton Chavis led the offense as he recorded a big game in the air and on the ground. Nick Catano also contributed over 105 all-purpose yards, including a 44-yard touchdown run.

The Caps look to extend their solid start this Thursday with an away game at Eastern Guilford. Eastern Guilford also enters the contest with a 2-0 record.
