As the teams prepared for the second half of play, officials spotted lightning in the area and suspended play. The game would later be postponed 14 hours until noon on Saturday. Coach Dawson emphasized to his players that whichever team came out ready to play under the strange circumstances would take control of the game.
Sitting on a 13-point lead, the Caps jumped on the Cougars as soon as play resumed with multiple key defensive stops and a brother-to-brother 29-yard halfback touchdown pass from Devone Jackson to Tyair Smith. The brothers, together with senior quarterback, Clifton Chavis, powered an impressive offensive performance, while senior Luke Davis led the defense with six tackles. The overall team effort resulted in a 61-36 opening victory.
The Caps (1-0) look to ride their early momentum into a home matchup against Cary this Friday night (8/19) at 7pm. Broughton hopes to avenge last season’s close late-game loss to the Imps.
