Volleyball Sweeps Wakefield

Broughton (12-1, 7-1) swept visiting Wakefield (10-4, 6-2) 25-10, 25-12, 25-11 on Tuesday night in Raleigh. The Caps jumped to an 8-3 lead in the opening frame and consecutive blocks featuring Jasmin Bradshaw, Kalee Vanderhorst and Claire Sawyer pushed the advantage to 11-3. Another Bradshaw block sparked a 6-1 run to give the hosts a 20-7 lead. A Vanderhorst kill ended the set. Consecutive kills by Vanderhorst gave the Capitals an 8-3 lead to begin the second stanza. Wakefield closed to within a single point at 9-8 before another kill from Vanderhorst ignited an 8-1 outburst to stretch the Broughton lead to 17-9. Kills from Grace Youngblood and Vanderhorst closed out the game. A kill from Vanderhorst kick-started a 14-3 run by the Caps to give them a commanding 22-9 lead in the third set. A Wolverine ball handling error accounted for match point.

Kalee Vanderhorst tallied 15 kills (.406) and 10 digs and Grace Youngblood hammered out 10 kills (.429). Jade Demps added 9 kills and 2 blocks and Nan Parrish had 5 kills. Claire Sawyer posted 32 assists, 2 aces and 7 digs and Jasmin Bradshaw chipped in 3 blocks. Alden Willis picked up 13 digs, Amber Russell recorded 8 digs and 2 aces and Holli Smith scooped up 5 digs. Russell paced the Caps with a 2.5 serve receive average (on a 3.0 scale). Demps (2.4) and Vanderhorst (2.25) also contributed to a strong serve receive performance by the hosts.

Ade' Owokiniran led Wakefield with 4 kills and Gentry Benda added 3 kills. Lauren Slusher had 13 digs, Benda added 9 digs and Owokiniran tallied 5 digs.

The Capitals host Enloe on Thursday (4:30/5:30).
