Caps suffer road loss at Middle Creek

The box score from Thursday night's game will show that Middle Creek scored two goals in each half to record a 4-0 win over the visiting Caps.

But they were two very different halves. In the first half, Broughton kept the Middle Creek goalie busy with multiple scoring chances and activity in the box, but were unable to find the back of the net. At one point, sophomore Ava Neijna struck a beautiful cross on a corner that hit the far post and bounced out.

Meanwhile, Middle Creek used a strong counter attack to convert two of its limited scoring opportunities in the first half.

The game changed when Middle Creek scored its third goal just a few minutes into the second half. Broughton found itself fighting off repeated attacks by the Mustangs for much of the rest of the game, and was not able to create nearly as many offensive chances as they had in the first half.

The non-conference loss brings Broughton's overall record to 6-4, with a 3-3 record in conference play. Up next week are conference matches with Heritage and Wake Forest.

Earlier, the junior varsity suffered a similar fate, losing 4-0 after Middle Creek scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the game.

Cap's Golf Notches Second Win of the Week

Broughton notches a 2-1 road win over Enloe

Broughton eked out a narrow 2-1 victory over Enloe Wednesday night after failing to convert several scoring opportunities.

The Caps controlled possession for most of the game, with the Eagles struggling to get the ball across midfield for much of the second half. But Broughton sent several shots wide or high, failed to connect on corners or crossing passes, and suffered some difficult bounces in the box.

Abby Manring and Maggie Gall
Broughton scored once in each half, with junior Abby Manring striking first in the 14th minute, off of an assist from sophomore Ava Neijna. In the second half, junior Maggie Gall nailed a shot from the edge of the 18 in the 64th minute to give the Caps a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Abby Finan had the assist.

Enloe made things tense late in the game when they scored on a corner kick in the 71st minute to narrow the gap to 2-1. Broughton managed to prevent any additional chances, and held on for the 2-1 victory to even their record in conference play at 3-3.

Earlier, the Broughton junior varsity defeated the Enloe junior varsity 2-0. Lynde Flanders scored from 25 yards out about 15 minutes into the game to get the scoring started. Kate Lewis added an insurance goal midway through the second half when she scored on a beautiful through ball from Kaia Beeson. Keeper Emma Passey, along with the Caps strong back line, recorded the shutout.

Next up is a non-conference road game against Middle Creek on Thursday.

Broughton's Girls' Lacrosse overcame a strong effort by Millbrook Tuesday night to win 19-10 at the Wildcats' field.
Millbrook took an early 3-2 lead.  At the 15:00 mark in the first half the score was tied 4-4.  At that point the Caps' defense stiffened, and their offense scored 9 straight goals to take a 13-4 lead over the Wildcats into halftime.
Millbrook continued their tenacious play throughout the second half, in which each team scored six goals, resulting in a 19-10 final score.

Caps run over by Wakefield Wolverines

Broughton got off to a great start Monday night, scoring the game's first goal and keeping an undefeated Wakefield team off the scoreboard for the first 15 minutes. But the Wolverines unrelenting attack ultimately proved to be too much for the Caps, who suffered a 1-7 road loss.

The Caps first -- and only -- goal came in the fifth minute when senior Zoe Neijna tapped in a beautiful cross by junior Anne Lassiter Barnes. The Wakefield defense was able to scramble to break up another opportunity by Barnes a few minutes later.

But once Wakefield finally scored, in the 15th minute, the flood gates broke open. Wakefield took a 3-1 lead into halftime, and tacked on another four goals in the second half.

Earlier, the junior varsity team got a brilliant goal from Kate Lewis and stout defense from keeper Emma Passey to rally for a 1-1 tie against Wakefield.

The Wolverines jumped in front 1-0 midway through the first half when a corner kick landed in front of the Caps' goal and Wakefield banged it in for a score. Broughton swarmed back in the second half, getting on the scoreboard when Lewis ran down a gorgeous ball up the field and fired from 18 yards out over the arms of the goalie.

Wakefield had multiple chances after that to break the 1-1 tie. But Passey slapped away two shots, knocking one over the crossbar, and dove to smother another loose ball only yards from the goal. Another save, with 3:29 to play, snuffed Wakefield's last chance.

The Caps are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Enloe for the second of three road games this week.

Caps Golf Continues Winning Ways at Lonnie Poole

The Caps won their fifth straight Cap 8 Conference match of the year today at Lonnie Poole.

Playing the difficult back nine at NC State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course, the Caps carded an overall score of 144 (even par for the round) to best second place Leesville by 17 shots and third place Enloe by 22 shots.  The highlight of the day was a chip in eagle by Junior Patrick Carlin on his last hole of the day. Patrick also earned medalist honors for the event.

The top four scores that counted for the Caps included:

Patrick Carlin (Junior)         33    ( 3 under par)
Peter Fountain (Freshman)  36    (even)
Jimbo Stanley (Senior)        37    (one over)
Connor Jones (Junior)         38    (two over)

Caps Win a Big One at Wakefield

Ten months ago the Broughton Girls Lacrosse season ended with a controversial game against rival Wakefield. In that game last May, trailing 9-8 with ten seconds left in the first half, the Caps scored.  However, an inadvertant whistle rescinded that score, leaving the Caps down one at halftime. The second half was never played, cancelled by the presence of a storm in the area.  Wakefield was awarded the win, and for ten months the Caps have waited to resume play.
On Thursday night the Caps vindicated themselves, with a convincing 19-7 win at Wakefield.
Broughton started Thursday's game strong, and never let up.  The Caps led early 4-0, led 11-4 at half, and built that lead through the second half.  Scoring for the Caps were Addie Camak (5), Margaret Anne Warner (5), Sydney Russel (4), EJ Fuller (4) and Carol Seigler (1).
The Caps defense were outstanding through the game, led by Carson Harvey in goal.
With the win, the Caps remain unbeaten in conference play, and are a big step closer to a conference title.
The team's next game is Tuesday March 28 at Millbrook.

Caps wrap up week with win over Wake Forest

Broughton earned its second win of the week Thursday night with a 3-2 defeat of visiting Wake Forest.

The game initially looked like it was going to be an offensive explosion, with three goals being scored in the first 10 minutes, but goals were harder to come by as the game wore on.

Meredith Brown, Lucy Krueger and Elizabeth Gilchrist
Junior Lucy Krueger got the scoring started less than four minutes into the game when she nailed a shot into the upper 90 from more than 20 yards out, putting the Caps up 1-0. But about five minutes later, the Cougars tied the score with a perfectly placed free kick that sailed into the goal.

Broughton responded quickly, taking less than three minutes to regain the lead. Freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist buried a pass from junior Anne Lassiter Barnes to put the Caps back on top 2-1.

That was the halftime score, thanks in part to a great save by freshman keeper Sydney Spoor on a Wake Forest shot in the 13th minute.

The Caps wasted little time adding to their lead once play resumed in the second half, with junior Meredith Brown ripping a shot from just outside the box in the 44th minute. Freshman Aislynn Grantz had the assist.

Broughton then held off several Wake Forest attacks, including one shot that hit the post, until a Cougar attacker managed to score with less than five minutes remaining in the game. That would turn out to be the last score of the game - a 3-2 win for the Caps - that takes Broughton to 2-2 in Cap 8 play.

Broughton returns to action on Monday, with a road game at undefeated Wakefield.

A birthday celebration breaks out after the win

Broughton records 2-1 win over Sanderson

Broughton found the back of the net twice Wednesday night to earn a 2-1 victory over the visiting Sanderson Spartans.

The Caps struck first, in the 13th minute, when junior Anne Lassiter Barnes streaked up the middle of the field to finish off a pass from junior Meredith Brown and put Broughton up 1-0. Meanwhile, the Caps played another strong defensive game, limiting Sanderson to just a couple of scoring chances in the first half.

Sara Hanna Fortier, Anne Lassiter Barnes
With the Caps holding on to a slim 1-0 lead to begin the second half, freshman keeper Sydney Spoor stretched out to deflect a Sanderson shot in the 49th minute that appeared to be on target.

Broughton managed to build on its lead when sophomore Sara Hanna Fortier scored on a breakaway in the 57th minute. Junior Maggie Gall had the assist.

Sanderson tacked on a goal in the 76th minute to narrow the margin, but the Caps were able to hold the Spartans off in the final minutes of the game to secure the 2-1 conference victory.

Earlier, the junior varsity suffered a 1-2 loss to Sanderson despite controlling possession for much of the game. Sanderson scored first, about 10 minutes into the game, but the Caps tied it up on a goal by Lynde Flanders from a cross by Mary Martha Stokes. Sanderson went ahead 1-2 on a goal about midway through the second half.

Next up is Wake Forest, which visits Broughton tonight.

Cap's Mens Golf Wins Second Cap 8 Match of the Week

Playing at Hedingham Golf Course the Caps captured their fourth straight conference match of the year.  The team carded a total score of 145 (5 over par) on the teams best four balls.  Leesville finished 9 shots back at 154.

The team was led by Senior Jimbo Stanley, Sophomore Biggs Hawley and Freshman Peter Fountain.  All three players recorded a score of even par 35 resulting a in tie for medalist honors in the event.  The scoring for the team was rounded out by Junior Patrick Carlin and Freshman Frank Gilliam who tied for the 4th best score.

The team returns to action in Kannapolis on Friday and Saturday competing against the best teams in the state at The North State Challenge.

Second-half woes lead to loss at Millbrook

Two goals off corner kicks in the first half were not enough for the Caps on Monday night, as they lost 2-3 in a conference road game at Millbrook.

Broughton started the game strong, earning a corner in the first four minutes that freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist buried from the far side of the box to put the Caps up 1-0. The assist went to sophomore Ava Neijna.

The Caps struck again, in the 23rd minute, when sophomore Sara Hanna Fortier soared to head a corner from Neijna into the back of the net. With the help of some strong defensive plays by sophomore Lauren Appleby and freshman Adair Warner, the Caps went into the half with a 2-0 lead.

But the tide turned quickly in the second half, with Millbrook scoring about 40 seconds into the half. And the Millbrook attack continued, adding goals in the 57th minute and the 68th minute to take the lead despite some good saves by freshman keeper Sydney Spoor.

The junior varsity team suffered a similar fate. Leading 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Lynde Flanders, the Caps gave up three Millbrook goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Wildcats added two more goals in the second half to make the final score 1-5.

Broughton returns home for its next game, against Sanderson, on Wednesday night.

Caps Remain Undefeated

The Broughton Girls Lacrosse team continued its winning ways on Friday with a very convincing victory over Enloe.  The Final score was 28-4, but what made this game so unusual was the fact that Enloe played the entire game without a goalie. The Enloe girls put up a valiant effort, but it was already a tall task to slow down the powerful Broughton offense and impossible to do so without a goalie.
The offensive show was led by Carol Seigler and Leaha Renee Burgess who scored 5 goals each while Georgia Davis and Sydney Russell contributed 4 goals apiece.  The entire offense was clicking as indicated by the 17 assists on the 28 goals.

Carson Harvey had another solid game at Goalie as her defensive teammates continued to limit the scoring opportunities for the Enloe Eagles.  The strong defensive effort also included 7 takeaways and 5 interceptions.  The robust effort continued on both offense and defense as the coach was able to freely substitute all positions on the field in the second half.

Caps earn shutout victory over Athens Drive

Broughton posted its third win of the young season -- and its first shutout of the season -- with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Athens Drive on Thursday night.

The Caps continued their strong defensive play, with freshman keeper Sydney Spoor making key saves on the few occasions when the visiting Jaguars managed to get off a shot. Meanwhile, Broughton got on the scoreboard about midway through the first half when freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist scored off a pass from junior Maggie Gall.

Broughton had other opportunities to add to their total in the second half, but were thwarted by several nice saves by the keeper for Athens Drive (including a diving block of a shot by sophomore Ava Neijna that was headed for the upper corner of the goal).

The Caps did add another goal, midway through the second half, when Gall buried a deflected shot by junior Anne Lassiter Barnes.

Earlier, the junior varsity continued its winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Athens Drive. Even though Broughton controlled time of possession, the two teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Caps continued to control play in the second half, but Athens Drive took advantage of a breakaway to record the game's first goal.

The Caps came roaring back, though, with Hallie Worth heading in a corner by Ashton Kendall to tie the score. Then Worth and Kendall combined again, with Worth finishing off a cross into the box by Kendall, sealing the 2-1 win for Broughton.

Broughton drops Cap 8 opener to Leesville

Despite a valiant defensive effort throughout the game, Broughton suffered a 2-0 conference loss to visiting Leesville Wednesday night.

Playing in cold and windy conditions, the Caps were on the attack to start the game, with freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist hitting the post on a shot in the opening minutes of the game. That was followed by a breakaway opportunity by Broughton that also came up empty.

But then the Caps found themselves on the defensive for much of the rest of the game, fending off several attacks and countless corner kicks by Leesville. Several Broughton players, from senior Savannah Jones working back to repeatedly stymie the Leesville attackers to freshman Adair Warner clearing some dangerous corner kicks, fought to keep the Caps in the game. At halftime, the score was 0-0.

Leesville finally broke through in the 51st minute on a disputed goal. The Leesville attacker was on her hands and knees in front of the goal when she managed to nudge the ball over the line to break the scoreless tie. Leesville scored again, in the 61st minute, to make the score 2-0.

Caps Remain Undefeated

Carol Seigler, Margaret Anne Warner, and Sydney Russell score 13 points combined
The Broughton Girls' Lacrosse team overwhelmed the Heritage Huskies 18-4 at home Wednesday afternoon, to remain undefeated for the season.
The Huskies, a team clearly improved over last year, took an early 1-0 lead.  After 15 minutes of play, the score was tied at 2-2.  From that point, the Caps reeled off 6 straight goals.  During that run, Sydney Russell scored three times within one minute to seal the win.
Broughton's defense was again outstanding.  Led by Marcy Waters, Anneka Pace, Greer Eckard, Carson Harvey and Reed Proctor, the defense has only allowed eight goals in four games this season.  Reed Proctor had an assist against the Huskies.
On offense, the Caps were led by Carol Seigler with five goals, Margaret Anne Warner and Sydney Russell with four each, EJ Fuller and Addie Camak with two each, and Bailey Burgess with one.
The Caps continue conference play on Friday at Enloe at 6 p.m., and then travel to Charlotte Saturday for a noon contest with out of conference opponent Myers Park.
