Broughton drops Cap 8 opener to Leesville

Despite a valiant defensive effort throughout the game, Broughton suffered a 2-0 conference loss to visiting Leesville Wednesday night.

Playing in cold and windy conditions, the Caps were on the attack to start the game, with freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist hitting the post on a shot in the opening minutes of the game. That was followed by a breakaway opportunity by Broughton that also came up empty.

But then the Caps found themselves on the defensive for much of the rest of the game, fending off several attacks and countless corner kicks by Leesville. Several Broughton players, from senior Savannah Jones working back to repeatedly stymie the Leesville attackers to freshman Adair Warner clearing some dangerous corner kicks, fought to keep the Caps in the game. At halftime, the score was 0-0.

Leesville finally broke through in the 51st minute on a disputed goal. The Leesville attacker was on her hands and knees in front of the goal when she managed to nudge the ball over the line to break the scoreless tie. Leesville scored again, in the 61st minute, to make the score 2-0.
