Caps get big win in the wind at The Brittany

The Caps got goals from six different players (including two from junior Abby Manring) to record an impressive 7-1 victory over the Jacksonville Cardinals Friday evening in The Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase.

The wind was cold and brisk for the game in Wilson, and often altered the the ball on passes and kicks in the air. But Broughton managed to get their second win of the season as they get ready for conference play to begin next week.

The Caps controlled possession from the outset, and got on the scoreboard first when a long, arcing shot by junior Lucy Krueger in the 13th minute curled into the goal over the outstretched hands of the Jacksonville keeper. A little over a minute later, the Caps thwarted one of Jacksonville's few scoring chances of the first half when freshman defender Adair Warner headed away a dangerous corner kick by the Cardinals.

The Caps quickly followed that with a second goal, with freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist scoring off a corner by sophomore Ava Neijna in the 16th minute.

Broughton struck again in the 23rd minute when junior Grace Hopkins finished off a shot by junior Anne Lassiter Barnes that the Jacksonville keeper fumbled. The Caps went into halftime up 3-0 and in search of shelter from the frigid wind.

The Cardinals scored their only goal shortly after the second half began, but the Caps wasted no time in regaining control of the game. Less than a minute after Jacksonville scored, junior Meredith Brown finished off a pass from Gilchrist to give Broughton a 4-1 advantage.

Playing with the wind at their backs and a greater sense of urgency, the Cardinals created more scoring chances for themselves in the second half. But Broughton's defenders fought off each attack, with sophomore Abby Finan making a nice stop on a Jacksonville breakaway in the 47th minute and junior keeper Taina Maisonet making two saves late in the game.

Broughton's fifth goal came in the 62nd minute when Manring cleaned up a shot by Krueger that the Jacksonville keeper couldn't handle. Manring scored again in the 72nd minute with a bullet into the back of the net to put the Caps up 6-1.

The Caps, with everybody on the roster getting playing time, continued to attack even as their lead grew. Barnes ended the scoring, in the 75th minute, when she finished up her own shot after the Jacksonville keeper fumbled it. The final score was 7-1.

Following the game, Ava Neijna received The Brittany sportsmanship award for Broughton.

The Caps are now 2-0 as they head into conference play with a home game on Monday against Wake Forest.
