Second-half woes lead to loss at Millbrook

Two goals off corner kicks in the first half were not enough for the Caps on Monday night, as they lost 2-3 in a conference road game at Millbrook.

Broughton started the game strong, earning a corner in the first four minutes that freshman Elizabeth Gilchrist buried from the far side of the box to put the Caps up 1-0. The assist went to sophomore Ava Neijna.

The Caps struck again, in the 23rd minute, when sophomore Sara Hanna Fortier soared to head a corner from Neijna into the back of the net. With the help of some strong defensive plays by sophomore Lauren Appleby and freshman Adair Warner, the Caps went into the half with a 2-0 lead.

But the tide turned quickly in the second half, with Millbrook scoring about 40 seconds into the half. And the Millbrook attack continued, adding goals in the 57th minute and the 68th minute to take the lead despite some good saves by freshman keeper Sydney Spoor.

The junior varsity team suffered a similar fate. Leading 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Lynde Flanders, the Caps gave up three Millbrook goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Wildcats added two more goals in the second half to make the final score 1-5.

Broughton returns home for its next game, against Sanderson, on Wednesday night.
