Broughton Women’s Lacrosse Wins at Sanderson

The Broughton Women’s Lacrosse team closed out their away schedule with another convincing win over the Lady Spartans of Sanderson.  From the opening draw, the offense was clicking on all cylinders as the Capitals scored 16 first half points to take a commanding 16-1 half-time lead.  The final score was 22-5 as the Capitals improved its record to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in conference.
It seemed like most of the first half was spent in the Broughton offensive zone as Margaret Anne Warner was able to control the draw most of the night.  When the Capitals control the draw, it has been hard all season for opposing teams to slow down the potent offense.
As a result of the offensive power unleashed in the first half, the Capitals were able to get a lot of work in for the reserves on both offense and defense.  Having three games in three days can be taxing, but tonight the starters were able to get some valuable rest as we head into tomorrow’s nights final regular season.
Leading the offensive tonight was Addie Camak (5 goals), followed by Carol Seigler (4 goals) and Margaret Anne Warner (4 goals).  Rounding out the scoring was Georgia Davis (3 goals), Sydney Russell (3 goals), Lili DiCaprio (2 goals) and Leah Renee Burgess (1 goal).  The team also had 14 assists on the 22 goals.
Once again the defense was very stingy with 9 takeaways, led by Marcy Waters’ 4 takeaways. Both goalies continued their strong play in net as Carson Harvey had 1 save in the first half and Emily Nicholos had 2 saves in the second half.
Please come out and help us celebrate the Seniors tomorrow night as we close out the regular season against Enloe.  Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. with Senior festivities starting near 6:00 p.m.

Broughton Girl’s Lacrosse Tames the Cougars again!!!

When these two teams met back in March, Broughton quickly took control of the game and cruised to a 16-1 win. This time the result was similar, a 19-3 Broughton win, but it took a more time than normal to get things going.  It took Broughton almost 5 minutes before they finally broke the ice with the first goal, but then the goals came in bunches. Leading Broughton in goals scored was Margaret Anne Warner with 5 goals.  Several of those goals came on assists from Carol Seigler who led the team with 6 assists.  Seven other Broughton players had 2 goals each showing a very balanced offensive attack.
The defense once again provided stiff competition for the opposing Cougars who were able to score 3 goals after only having 1 goal in the previous game.  The Cougars did not get by the defense often but when they did we had 2 strong performances from both our goalies.  Carson Harvey was in front of the net in the 1st half and Emily Nicholas filled in nicely in the 2nd half recording 3 saves.  We were also able to see several reserves see extended play including seniors Wooten Joyce and Katie Childrey on offense and Sara Goodwin Brook and Lawson Strickland on defense.

With the win the Capitals improved their overall record to 11-1 and 5-0 in the Conference. The Women’s Lacrosse team will close out the season next week with away games at Heritage on Tuesday, at Sanderson on Thursday. The season home finale against Enloe on Friday  will be Senior Recognition Night for our 10 Seniors.

Broughton loses 4-1 to Heritage

The Caps suffered a 4-1 loss to Heritage Thursday night as they continued to struggle to convert scoring opportunities.

Playing with a strong wind at their back, the Huskies scored twice in the first half -- one off of a corner and one off a counter following a Broughton corner -- to take a 2-0 lead into the half.

The Caps came out strong to start the second half, but the Heritage keeper blocked a shot on a Broughton corner and a subsequent free kick by the Caps was wide left of the goal. Heritage, meanwhile, added to their tally with a third goal that drew protests from the Broughton bench that offsides should have been called.

Broughton got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute when junior Lucy Krueger lofted a free kick into the box that junior Anne Lassiter Barnes was able to head over the outstretched hands of the Heritage keeper. But it took less than two minutes for the Huskies to respond with another goal, making the final score a 4-1 loss for the Caps.

The loss drops Broughton to 6-6 overall on the season and 3-5 in conference play with roughly half of the Cap 8 schedule remaining to be played.

Caps drop rain-soaked game at Wake Forest

Broughton's recent scoring difficulties continued to haunt them on Wednesday, when they lost a 2-1 contest at Wake Forest that was cut short because of thunder.

The Caps have struggled to convert scoring opportunities in recent games, recording a total of three goals in their last three games. That pattern continued Wednesday as the Caps met the Cougars in an afternoon game played in a steady downpour.

Neither team was able to make much happen during the first half, but Broughton managed to get on the scoreboard late in the half when junior Anne Lassiter Barnes crossed the ball to junior Meredith Brown waiting in front of the goal. Brown finished the cross to give the Caps a 1-0 lead at the half.

Broughton had more scoring chances in the second half, but it was Wake Forest that found the back of the net -- in the 45th and 56th minutes.

The Caps played with more energy after losing the lead, but were unable to get a shot on frame. The game ended in a 2-1 loss for the Caps when it was called with about 16 minutes remaining because of thunder in the area.

Broughton is now 6-5 on the year and 3-4 in Cap 8 play. Broughton returns to the field Thursday night for a home game against Heritage. The game is scheduled for 6 pm, instead of the usual 6:30 start time.

Cap's Golf has Strong Showing in Wilson

The Cap's Golf Team had a strong showing today finishing second to Clayton in the TYGA Wedgewood High School Shootout.  The Caps finished with a total score of 315 for the event.

The Caps were led by Freshman James Carlin and Junior Colby Mitchell.  James finished first overall in the event with a blistering two under par score of 70.  Colby also had a very solid showing finishing in fourth place overall with a score of 76.  Both players also earned invites to the prestigious Optimist Junior Invitational to be held in Palm Beach Florida in July.

The remaining players competing for the Caps included Sophomore Smith Brewer (12th overall), Sophomore Britt Stroud (16th overall) and Sophomore Carter Dickinson (20th overall).
