Soccer: Caps earn a 2-2 tie at the Brittany

After spotting Corinth Holders two early goals, the Caps fought back to earn a 2-2 tie Friday night in their annual pilgrimage to the Brittany Willis Memorial Scholarship Soccer Showcase in Wilson.

Corinth Holders knocked the Caps back on their heels by scoring back-to-back goals within the game's first three minutes. But after Caps Coach Tony DuBois made some defensive adjustments, Broughton settled down and slowly began to take control of the game.

The Caps were unable to score in the first half, but wasted little time once the second half got underway. Senior Anne Lassiter Barnes scored in the 43rd minute off an assist by sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist.

Broughton continued to attack, and tied the score in the 59th minute when Barnes drew a handful of defenders to her before passing off to senior Abby Manring to tap the ball into the goal. The Caps had several other chances in the game's closing minutes, but were unable to find the winning goal.

After the game, senior Lucy Krueger was named Broughton's recipient of the Brittany's Sportsmanship Award.

The Caps will be busy next week, with their first home game of the season (on Monday, against Knightdale) and two more road games (at Southeast Raleigh on Wednesday and at Athens Drive on Thursday).
