Soccer: Caps earn 3-2 road win over Apex

A pair of goals by senior Abby Manring and several critical defensive stops helped secure a 3-2 road win for the Caps on a cold, blustery night at Apex.

With the wind at their back in the first half, the Caps dominated possession early and scored first when Manring turned an Apex defender inside out and nailed a shot just under the crossbar in the 9th minute.

But Apex rallied, and started to take the attack to Broughton midway through the first half. Sophomore defender Lauren McMillan - with the keeper out of position - made a brilliant stop in front of the goal in the 21st minute to keep the Caps on top 1-0.

Apex managed to score two goals before halftime, though, and were thwarted on a couple of other scoring chances - junior defender Abby Finan hustled back to stop an Apex breakaway and senior keeper Davia Ingram-Terry made a diving save on an Apex shot.

Ingram-Terry was injured late in the first half, so senior Cate Brewer stepped in as a substitute keeper in the second half. Manring scored her second goal of the game in the 44th minute to even the score at 2-2, and the Caps continued to attack after an Apex player was ejected with a red card in the 55th minute. Senior Anne Lassiter Barnes scored in the 57th minute to put the Caps up 3-2.

Broughton held off several attacks by Apex late in the game - including a critical deflection by Brewer on a shot by the Cougars from close range and a header by sophomore defender Adair Warner to clear a dangerous ball in the box - to seal the win.

L-R: Abby Manring, Davia Ingram-Terry, Cate Brewer and Anne Lassiter Barnes
