Caps Suffer 2 Losses Against Leesville

The Lady Caps Softball team suffered two losses last week against Leesville High School.

On Wednesday, the CAPS played their first night game under the lights in Pride Country. In front of a large crowd, the CAPS kept Leesville to a low number of runs the first two innings, before the Pride hit a scoring streak in the 3rd inning and brought the score to 9-0. Both teams remained scoreless in the 4th inning, despite the fact that Broughton managed to fill the bases with runners but not get any of them across the plate.

The 5th inning brought some crazy action, but not all positive. With two outs already, the Caps sent Demi Jones up to the plate. She hit a nice shot just over the second baseman's head for the single. Of course, with Jones, she does not like to stay long on one base and soon stole 2nd, then 3rd base. While Elizabether Rotchford is at bat, the pitcher throws a ball and the Leesville catcher lost sight of it. Demi Jones comes in for the home base steal and the pitcher - coming in to cover home base - collides with her. It was a tremendous crash, that left the Leesville pitcher immobile on the ground. EMS was called and she was taken to the hospital some time later on a stretcher. So, while the CAPS got on the scoreboard, the game ended 11-1, and the two teams worried about the well-being of a fellow player.

Fortunately by the time the two teams met again on Friday for their second game, we all learned that the Leesville pitcher suffered some bruises and a concussion. But, she was up walking around and supporting her team from the sidelines.

The second game was the first one of the season that the CAPS hosted a Jaycee Park, so there was some adjustments for both teams on the new field. Further, the CAPS were missing a few of their starting players, so several were playing in new positions. Unfortunately, this resulted in a very tough first inning for Broughton, as they allowed
11 runs to be scored. However, after the first inning, they were able to keep Leesville scoreless until the 5th inning. The CAPS were never able to get their bats to produce on offence, and the 5th inning brought a couple inside the park home runs for Leesville, which resulted in a final score of 14-0.
