Soccer: Caps shut down Enloe in 5-0 win

Freshmen Allie Brown and Morgan Holt each scored two goals and Broughton's defense shut down Enloe's attack Thursday night as the Caps defeated the Eagles 5-0. It was the third conference win of the week for the Caps, who stand alone in second place in the Cap 7.

The Caps were dominant from the beginning of the game, which was played in a cold, gusting wind. Brown got the scoring started less than four minutes into the game when she buried a volley from a corner kick by sophomore Adair Warner.

About three minutes later, Holt got her first goal of the night when she nailed a rebound off a corner kick that she initiated. Meanwhile, the Eagles struggled to get the ball past the midfield line for much of the first half.

Holt got her second goal of the night in the 19th minute when senior Anne Lassiter Barnes dropped off a pass to her in front of the net. Less than two minutes later, Barnes got a goal of her own when she tapped the ball past the onrushing Enloe keeper and into an empty net.

Brown got her second goal of the night when she scored off a crossing pass by freshman Annie Agar. The Caps took a 5-0 lead into the half.

Broughton continued to dominate possession in the second half, but were unable to convert several scoring chances as the wind picked up and the temperature dropped.

But the Broughton defenders -- Agar, Warner, junior Abby Finan, sophomore Lauren McMillan, junior Grey Ramm as well as sophomore Elizabeth Gilchrist in the midfield -- shut down every Enloe attack. Sophomore keeper Sydney Spoor earned her second clean sheet of the week.

The Caps return to action on Monday, when they travel to Enloe to play the Eagles again -- the result of a game being rescheduled earlier in the season due to weather.

Earlier, the Broughton JV earned a tough 1-0 win over Enloe. Ava Reid scored the lone goal off a pass from Emma Dobek. Keeper Lillian Holmes and the defense notched another clean sheet.

Defenders Agar, Finan, Ramm, McMillan, Gilchrist, Warner and Spoor
